The oil and gas industry is separated into three sectors—upstream, midstream, and downstream. The midstream sector refers to the transportation, storage, and wholesale marketing of crude or refined petroleum products.

One common transport system used to move crude oil is a pipeline. Crude oil moves within the pipeline from the production site to the refinery. Next, the refinery sends the refined product to downstream distributors.
